I took the children to story hour at the public library today. Three days a week, the library offers story hours for children between the ages of 2-3 (the library also offers separate story hours for children of other ages as well). Children of other ages are permitted to attend with a caregiver, so of course Gabriel joined us. Most of the children who attended this particular story hour were older than 2 or 3 (I suppose they were with siblings who were between the ages of 2-3). During story hour, a person from the library staff reads a book and then she plays an interactive song, to which the children can sing and dance, then she reads another story, and so on. After about one half hour of reading stories and singing songs, the children can draw and do a craft related to the theme of the stories that were just read.
Well, all of today’s stories some how involved snakes. Some of the little boys knew all about snakes and the different species and were very into identifying all the kinds of snakes in the books.
Instead of sitting in a semi-circle with the rest of the children, Isabelle insisted on standing next to the library staffer who was reading the books.
During the first book, one little boy exclaimed right away, “that’s a diamond back snake.”
Isabelle exclaimed rather loudly, “No, that’s a bad snake named Satan! No I listen to Satan! I only listen to God.”
Upon hearing this, Nathaniel chimed in, “That’s a bad snake named Satan!”
Every time one of the little boys tried to identify the kind of snake that was in the book, Isabelle would say, “No, that’s a bad snake named Satan.”
I had planned to take the twins back to the library tomorrow for more story hour, but for this entire week the story hour theme is snakes. Unless I can curb Isabelle’s impulse to call every snake “Satan”, we won’t be going back tomorrow.
