Boy's First Basketball Game

On Saturday, Gabriel and Nathaniel had their first basketball game. They are in a CYO basketball league that is run through our church, but is the largest and most well-respected basketball league in the county, so we get a lot of kids through the program who are not affiliated with the church. Gabriel and Nathaniel are in the K-2nd league and on the same team. Gabriel did not really want to play basketball, but Nathaniel was very excited to play since several of the boys in 2nd grade were playing. The boys started practicing the first week of November and on Saturday they had their first game. It's one of those learning leagues, but they definitely keep score and make calls on major violations. The kindergarteners play in quarters one and three and the 1st and 2nd graders play in quarters 2 and 4. A 1st grader might move down to play with the kindergarteners depending on the numbers. I really like the boys' coaches. They do a really good job with the little boys and really respect what they do. Unfortunately, the boys' team lost on Saturday. It was really a case of an imbalance of experience. We had more K &1st and just more inexperienced kids in general. But they tried hard and the coaches coached hard.

Unfortunately for Nathaniel and Gabriel, we missed last week's practice (Gabriel's school program for St. Nick Night) and this week's practice (I got totally lost on the way to the new gym) and I plan on them missing next week's practice because it is on Jeremiah's birthday. They will also miss this Saturday's game because they have a two-day swim meet and since their swim meets are less than once a month, I told the coach if a meet conflicts with a game, they will swim.

So, we are hoping for a better result next game!

Sounds like a great opportunity for the boys and a neat program!
